Elements of the Psyche
Major Divisions of the Human Psyche:
1. Spirit (pneuma – Greek word for breath)
2. Soul (sukeh – Greek word for “animal
life”)
3. Body: brain, perceptive apparatus, and processing system for presentation
and reaction by the soul, and perception by the spirit
The “Heart” (“cardia” – Greek word for heart), is the connection between the soul
and spirit.
General areas of the human experience:
1. Being
2. Doing
Structural Components of the Human Being:
1. Body
2. Soul
3. Spirit
Elements of the Soul:
1. Mind
2. Will
3. Emotions
Modalities of Expression of the soul:
1. Words
2. Tones, gestures, posture, gait, tension
3. Physiology
4. Actions
Inner states and processes from which spring our expression of pain, hurt, and irritation:
1. Thoughts and Feelings
a. Past hurts, memories of those hurts, both conscious and
reflexive
b. Genetic, inborn, nervous system based preferences and sense of pain
2.
Intent, Prayer, Faith, and Commitment
a. Spiritual alliance can polarize a person
against another of a differing allegiance
These Modalities of Expression communicate our inner "state" to the outer world.
It is through these modalities that we irritate and please our fellow man. In general,
we probably react most strongly to the "overt" modalities of expression (actions,
words, tones, and gestures). But, we also react to the more subtle communication,
namely to the spirit and heart of a man. This "psychic", soul-to-soul, spirit-to-spirit,
channel of communication can be clear and profoundly accurate.
