Nightmares
By Thomas Lee Abshier, ND

Nightmares are the subconscious expression of an internal desire, commitment, or pressure to act, that has not been given actual external expression. Our drives and desires may have been planted there by God from our birth, or they may be part of our genetic inheritance, or something implanted in our hearts by life experience, insight, or coaching that resonates with our sense of beauty, righteousness, or purpose.
The key word is contract. As conscious beings we can choose to act or not, but if we have an internal commitment, a drive, a contract to act, that inner being that has held that commitment will continue to press outward until that commitment is manifested in action.
Another analogue to contract is “energy”. In the physics sense of the word, there are two types of energy – potential and kinetic. Energy that is associated with mass in motion is kinetic, and energy held static in space is called potential energy. These two types of energy can transform into each other – potential energy can be released and convert into motion; and kinetic energy can be captured and held static in compression such as a spring.
Returning to an examination of the human condition and mind, we note that the contract to action, the commitment inside the heart, the desire to perform and produce, are all the equivalent to potential energy. The human psyche has within it a desire to express itself in the real world of mass and men, but when thwarted, suppressed, blocked, or prevented from expression, that internal pressure associated with commitment/desire to action may produce a greater internal pressure.
That internal pressure is like an internal entity. It can access the resources of motivation of the conscious mind. The executive, the conscious mind, can choose to act, or not act, as per the rights we have as adults with free will. But, if we choose to remain inactive in opposition to a powerful commitment, that internal entity, may take control of the dream generating apparatus and produce nightmares. The results would be the notification of the conscious mind of the presence of the stagnant and stifled energy of commitment to action contained within the subconscious mind.
The resolution of the nightmare comes with taking action. When the commitment to action is manifested in actual action, the subconscious pressure is released and the internal psychic entity holding that commitment no longer needs to increase its force on the conscious mind to produce that action through the vehicle of the mind, will, and body.
The key to resolving nightmares is thus identifying and interpreting the symbols of the dream language so as to properly bring the psychic pressure to consciousness, and commitment to habitual action and expression.
